Woman's Body Lied Unattended Over 2 Days, Orphan Minors Perform Last Rite

Bhadrak: After missing father years ago and grandfather who died 8 months ago, life could not have turned more cruel for this 3-year-old kid and his 9-year-old elder sister Rupa Mallik from Bhadrak when their mother Subarna Mallik also left them forever two days ago. But what was most heart-wrenching was that they had to wait for others help to perform last rites of her mother whose body remained unattended for two days.

The incident which has become talk of the town in Bhadrak, came to limelight on Friday after the two minor kids along with their helpless 80-year-old granny sat beside the mother's body for over 2 days at Betada village of Basudevpur.

After the spread of the news, nearby villagers came forward and took Subarna's body to village cremation ground where her minor kids performed the last rituals.

According to reports, Subarna was bedridden for past few months and died two days ago. She left her kids leaving nothing precious but a thatched mud hut and the mercy of others.

"My mother complained of heartache few days before and died without getting treatment," said her grief-stricken daughter Rupa.

On the other hand, Basudevpur Tehsildar, Soumyashree Panigrahi expressed grief over the tragic incident and assured to provide shelter for the kids who have become almost orphan if not for their octogenarian grandmother.

"We are making necessary arrangements for the kids. We will ensure that they get education and other support," said Panigrahi.
