Rourkela: Setting a precedent of self defense, amid rise in assault cases on women and girls in Odisha, a woman on Tuesday attacked a youth with stone after he allegedly attempted to rape her 11-year-old daughter in Plant Site area in the Steel City.

The local youth identified as Santu (30) sustained critical head injuries after being hit with a stone by the woman. He was initially admitted to Rourkela Government Hospital but as his health condition deteriorated, he was later referred to Burla VIMSAR.

As per reports, the woman’s two minor daughters were alone at their house yesterday when taking advantage of their mother's absence, Santu allegedly barged into their house and tried to rape the elder daughter.

However, their neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing screams of the girls and rescued them. Fearing action, the youth managed to flee the spot.

Later, when the woman returned back home and came to know about the incident, she began to search the whereabouts of Santu. Following a frantic search, she finally traced the accused and in a fit of rage, she attacked him with a boulder after spotting him in Malgodown area.

Meanwhile, police have initiated an investigation into the rape attempt incident after receiving a complaint by the girls' mother. A case has also been registered under POCSO Act in connection with the incident.
