Woman ‘Murdered’ For Opposing Illegal Sale Of Liquor In Odisha's Jajpur

Jajpur: A woman was allegedly murdered for allegedly opposing illegal sale of liquor at Barei village under Mangalpur police limits in Jajpur district.

The deceased identified as Lakshmi Jena had been reportedly opposing Bijay Jena of the same village who was involved in the illegal liquor trade. Lakshmi had also requested the local police to stop the same and lodged a complaint seeking action against the illegal trader.

Following Lakshmi’s repeated complaints, police acted tough on the illegal business. The closure of the business had irked Bijay and in a fit of rage, he allegedly attacked Lakshmi on Monday with stone and sticks, leaving her critically injured.

Lakshmi was first admitted to the district headquarters hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after her condition deteriorated.

However, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the premier health institute late last night.

Family members of the deceased have lodged a police complaint against Bijay. Besides, the locals have demanded strict action against the accused and arrest of other who were involved in the crime.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the accused based on the complaint of Lakshmi’s family members and launched an investigation to find out any others’ involvement in the alleged murder.
