Kandhamal/Malkangiri: Sordid condition of healthcare and infrastructure in rural pockets of the State has come to fore once again. A woman delivered a baby girl while being carried in a sling in Tajungia panchayat under Daringbadi block of Kandhmal district on Sunday due to lack of motorable road to her village.

According to sources, one Makanti, wife of Nikadam Majhi of Duburi village under the block, complained of labour pain in the morning following which, the villagers carried her in a sling owing to the lack of motorable roads to the village.

While being carried in a sling, the woman experienced severe pain and delivered a baby girl near Brahmanigaon, sources added.

Later, ASHA workers and medical staffers reached the spot and rushed the woman and the new born to nearest Bhahmanigaon hospital. The condition of the new born and the woman is stated to be stable.

Earlier on March 16, another pregnant woman had delivered a baby while being carried in sling in Ankoli panchayat under Patrapur block of Ganjam district. She woman was being carried in a sling to the hospital due to lack of motorable roads for ambulance.

In another incident, police and ODRAF team helped an expectant mother to go across a road which was washed away due to heavy rainfall in Khariapur block of Malkangiri district.

According to sources, the woman of Majhiguda village complained of labour pain in the morning, following which her family members took her to the nearest hospital. However, she was stuck in the midway as the road connecting to the hospital was washed away due to heavy rainfall in the area.
On getting information, the police and ODRAF members rushed to the spot and helped the woman to cross the damaged road with the use of ladder and rope.
