Winged guests flock to Dhanamandal bringing delight to locals

Jajpur: Residents of Dhanamandal under Barchana block of Jajpur district are waking up to the cheerful chirping of their winged guests reaching here every year signalling the onset of monsoon. As per reports, as many as 5,000 migratory birds have flocked to Dhanamandal this year.

The migratory birds usually reach during the second-third week of June and return in October. They fly down from Siberia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka and build nests here ,” informed said Chandikhol Forester Sashikant Behera.

“Since my childhood days, I have seen the ‘Gendalia’ birds visiting this place. The arrival of these winged guests is an indication that monsoon is here,” said Sheikh Sultan, a local.

Dhanamandala Bazaar Committee member Deepar Mishra said, “The birds reach here after flying long distances and their prescence means heavy rain and boost in agricultural activities.”

On the other hand locals along with Forest personnel are on their toes providing round-the-clock vigil to the winged guests.

“The birds feel secured here and we are doing our best to keep them safe,” stated Sudhakar Das, another resident of Dhanamandal.
