Keonjhar: Two persons were killed and eight others sustained injuries after the vehicles carrying marriage parties met with accidents in Keonjhar and Kendrapara districts late last night.
In Keonjhar, a youth was killed and five others sustained injuries after the van carrying them to a marriage ceremony lost control and overturned near Badapichhula Chhak yesterday evening. All the six persons were going to attend a marriage party in Keonjhar when the vehicle skidded off the road and overturned leading to the death of the youth on the spot.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the youth’s body, and sent it for post-mortem, said reports.
The driver of the vehicle who received critical injuries in the incident was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack while the other four were admitted to Harichandanpur Hospital after preliminary treatment at Pandapada Community Health Centre.
Similarly, an elderly man was killed and three others were injured after a pickup van carrying them overturned near Chitraptola in Patkura area of Kendrapara district in the wee hours of Saturday. The incident happened when all of them were returning home after attending a marriage. All the injured have been rushed to Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
In another mishap last night, two youths were killed after an iron-laden truck near Jhinki Chhak on Bolangir-Sonepur Road hit their two-wheeler from behind.
Sonepur Town police rushed to the spot, seized the truck and started an investigation. However, the driver of the truck had fled the spot after the mishap.
The deceased have been identified as Ranjit Mallick and Marameshwar Baghar of Phagunamala village under Manamunda area in Boudh district and their bodies have been sent to Boudh Hospital for post-mortem, sources said.
Meanwhile in Cuttack, a seven-year-old boy was killed and another five sustained injures after a passenger bus rammed into a truck from behind near Khaira bridge in Jagatpur area today. The incident took place when the bus was en route to Cuttack from Chandikhole in Jajpur district. All the injured have been rushed to SCB Hospital.
