Bhubaneswar: Several districts in northern and southern Odisha are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall till August 26 under the influence of a fresh low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal, India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar said on Monday.

"Under influence of yesterday's cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and neighbourhood, a Low Pressure Area has formed over North Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood. Associated cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric levels tilting southwestwards with height," the weather office informed through a tweet.

Ajay Nayak, duty officer of IMD, Bhubaneswar said, “Most places in northern and southern Odisha are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Therefore, orange warning has been sounded for nine districts.”

According to a release issued by the weather office, the orange warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Dhenkanal. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts in the next 24 hours.

Similarly, heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Puri, Kandhamal, and Boudh. The Met office has issued yellow warning for the districts.

The fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for next 24 hours.

Four types of colour-coded rain warnings

  • Red: Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm (take action)
  • Orange: Heavy to very rainfall 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm (be prepaid)
  • Yellow: Moderate rain 15.6 mm to 64.4 mm (be updated)
  • Green: Light rain 2.5 mm to 15.5 mm with no warning

Day-1 (valid up to 8.30 am, August 24)

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Puri and Angul.

Day-2 (valid from 8.30 am August 24 to 8.30 am August 25)

Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Angul, Deogarh, Sundergarh, Puri, Kandhamal, and Boudh.

Day-3 (Valid from 8.30 am August 25 to 8.30 am August 26)

Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar and Angul.

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Sundergarh, Puri, Khordha, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Bolangir.

Day-4 (Valid from 8.30 am August 26 to 8.30 am August 27)

Orange warning : Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sundergarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, and Bolangir.

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Jajpur, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Nuapada, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi.

Day-5 (Valid from 8.30 am August 27 to 8.30 am August 28)

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Sundergarh, Bargarh, Bolangir, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Nabarangpur and Keonjhar.

Besides, fishermen have also been advised not to venture into sea along and off Odisha coast during 25th to 27th August 2020.
