Phulbani: It was a pleasant surprise for commuters on a busy road at Phulbani on Wednesday morning to find a traffic policeman sweeping the road to clear off layers of sand that posed imminent threat to motorists, two wheeler riders in particular.

Needless to say the extraordinary care and concern of the man in uniform evoked immediate reaction from netizens and people across the State who showered praise on the cop for going beyond the call of his duty in ensuring safety to motorists.

In a video that has gone viral on several social media platforms, the traffic cop, identified as Subrat Kumar Nayak, can be seen sweeping the road near Gandhi Chhak at Phulbani, the headquarters town of Kandhamal district.

Nayak can be seen brooming away the sand accumulated on the road so that motorists did not skid over it.

"Sand lay scattered on the road after some repair work got over. The accumulated sand caused a couple of bikers losing control over their vehicles and skid. On Wednesday morning, a man riding a motorcycle with a child on the pillion also slipped and fell down. However, fortunately they escaped with no major injuries," said Nayak.

"I had earlier informed NAC officials and the contractor to clear off the sand. When they failed to act, I decided to clean the road with a broom so that people don't skid on the road anymore," added the kind-hearted traffic cop.

Earlier in October last year, video of traffic policeman, Lalit Mohan Rout of Town Traffic Police Station in Cuttack, sweeping rubble on a road near Sikharpur square had gone viral. The cop had earned massive praise for his kind gesture.
