Parlakhemndi: An under-trial prisoner died due to illness at Parlakhemndi sub-jail in Gajapati district on Monday.

A resident of Haryana, Jaypal Singh was found in an unconscious condition by the jail staff and was immediately taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead, jail superintendent Hanu Sethy informed. The reason of his death has not been ascertained.

He was lodged in the sub-jail after being arrested in ganja smuggling case on October 16.

Singh was among six who were arrested by police for smuggling of around 160 kg contraband to Haryana from Shikulipadar area of Parlakhemndi.

The value of the seized item is worth around Rs 40 lakh.
