Salepur: Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday sought transit remand of a person who was arrested from Kushambi village under Salepur police limits in Odisha’s Cuttack district on sedition charges.

The accused, identified as Sayyed Hassan Ahmed, is facing sedition charges for allegedly posting threatening content on social media against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Producing the accused before the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) court today, the UP police submitted a petition seeking the transit remand of the accused for further interrogation.

Meanwhile, Sayyed’s father Rasid Ahmad expressed surprise over the incident and feigned his ignorance over the development. “My son is innocent. He has never been accused in any criminal cases before. He doesn’t have any cases pending against him even in the local police station," Rasid said.

"How could he threaten somebody in the social media to whom he doesn’t even know? I am really surprised to see Uttar Pradesh Police arresting him in a remote place like Kushambi. It must be some conspiracy against him,” Rasid added.

Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday had arrested Ahmed from Kushambi village under Salepur police limits. A police team from Singhbali police station under UP’s Bagpat district booked Ahmed under Sections 124 (A), 507, 504 and 353 (A).
