Bhubaneswar: Farmers in several districts of Odisha are going through a harrowing time due to unseasonal rainfall which has reportedly destroyed their crops.
According to reports, farmers in Naktideul and Rairakhol blocks of Sambalpur district had grown various types of vegetables like cabbage, tomato, brinjal and green chilli, however, they have suffered damage due to waterlogging owing to unseasonal rainfall.
“Our crops have been damaged so badly due to the rain that we don’t want to go to the field anymore,” alleged Sakuntala Pradhan, a farmer from Naktideul area.
Likewise, farmers in Remuna, Basta and Sadar blocks of Balasore had to witness massive damage to their crops due to hailstones.
Meanwhile, farmers of Gania, Basapur, Bagada and Garadpur area in Kendrapara also alleged that their crops have been damaged due to pest attack.
“We had grown cabbage in our field. They are now being attacked by pests and we are unable to sprinkle pesticides in the fields to control the pest menace as it has been raining for the last five days,” said a vegetable gardener of Kendrapara.
Quintals of paddy kept in open mandis have also been damaged due to the rain in parts of Sonepur district. Farmers alleged that around 20,000 packets of paddy were lying in the open mandi for the last 15 days but they got soaked in rain and have started to sprout.
“We had kept the paddy bags in the mandi for the last 15 days but as they were not lifted by any of the millers it got soaked in rain and started sprouting,” said a farmer from Sonepur.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has predicted dry weather in the State.
“Rain will subside in the State. There may be cloudy weather but the State will witness dry weather in the upcoming days," said Kandan Murmu, Duty Officer.
