UGC directs universities to ban junk food on campuses

New Delhi: In a fresh reminder to authorities of colleges and universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed for tougher measures to ban junk food on the campuses of educational institutions.

Though UGC had issued a similar advisory in November 2016, it has now asked the college and university authorities to implement the orders sternly.

In a letter issued on August 21, UGC directed the authorities to create adequate awareness among the younger generation who are vulnerable to such dangerous exposures.

Besides, the vice chancellors of universities have been asked to submit a report on the action taken by their respective institutions towards banning junk food on campuses.

Sources said such directive is aimed at putting an end to availability of junk food on campuses and to prevent students from falling prey to the obesity epidemic.

Not only the UGC, several other bodies including Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had earlier directed all affiliated schools to take junk food off their canteen menu.
