Sambalpur: In what could be the heftiest fine imposed on a traffic violator, the driver and owner of a truck were slapped with fines amounting over Rs 6.53 lakh by the Sambalpur Regional Transport Office for various offences. Though the incident happened on August 10, much before the implementation of the amended Motor Vehicles Act, it is being said that the fines were reportedly levied for violating the old Motor Vehicles Act.
The truck, registered in Nagaland, was challaned by the enforcement team of Transport office in Sambalpur when it found the vehicle violating multiple traffic rules. The owner of the truck has been identified as Shailesh Shankar Lal Gupta of Bethel Colony in Phek Town of Nagaland while the driver Dillip Karta happens to be a resident of Jharsuguda.
The RTO levied the penalty on the driver and truck owner and issued a challan for driving without road tax and not carrying documents including vehicle insurance, violating air and noise pollution and carrying passengers on the goods vehicle. This apart, the vehicle violated permit conditions, sources said.
According to the challan copy, Rs 100 was fined for General Offence, Rs 500 for disobedience of orders/obstruction, Rs 1000 for violating air and noise pollution, Rs 5000 for carrying passengers in goods vehicle, Rs 5000 for using vehicle without permit or violating permit conditions, Rs 1000 for plying without insurance.
But the major chunk of Rs 6,40,500 was levied on the owner for not paying road tax from July 21, 2014 to September 30, 2019 under Odisha Motor Vehicles Taxation Act.
The driver was later detained u/s 207 of MV Act, at the care cost and watch/ward of vehicle as well as goods by owner till disposal of the case.
On Wednesday, a truck driver and the owner were fined Rs 2,00,500 under the new MV Act after being stopped on the GT Karnal Road in the national capital. This is claimed to be the highest fine amount imposed for violation of norms in Delhi, since the amended Act came to force on September 1. Earlier, a truck from Rajasthan was challaned with a fine of Rs 1.41 lakh for overloading and other traffic offences.
