Bhubaneswar: The State Transport Authority (STA) has collected a whopping Rs 1.06 crore in just 24 hours of re-enforcement of Motor Vehicles Act 2019 in Odisha on March 1, revealed Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera today.

As per the information shared by the Minister, total 3870 motorists were penalised among which 126 persons were fined for triple riding, 48 for speaking over phone while driving, 10 persons for wrong-side driving, 14 for drunk driving, 1831 people for not wearing helmets. for speed driving 277 persons were fined.

Rs 88 lakh cash was collected by RTO officials from 1758 defaulters while Rs 18 lakh penalty was collected by police officials from 2112 persons. Police have also registered cases against those caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Monday, Bhubaneswar RTO-2 issued a challan of Rs 37,500 against the owner of a school van for flouting various traffic norms. The vehicle reportedly intercepted in Infocity area of the capital was being driven by a person who had no valid DL. The vehicle was plying without insurance and also violated permit conditions and pollution norms.

The various charges levelled against the school van include--using vehicle without registration (Rs 5000), general offence (Rs 500), allowing person to drive vehicle without valid driving license (Rs 5000), driving without valid DL (Rs 5000), violating air and noise pollution (Rs 10000), using vehicle without permit (10000) and plying without insurance (Rs 2000).

This apart, two buses of a private college were fined Rs 25,500 each in Nayapalli area over multiple offences such as - using vehicle without registration, general offence, violating air and noise pollution and using vehicle without permit.

Meanwhile in Sambalpur, a bike owner was challaned Rs 43000 for traffic violations under the new MV Act. While Rs 25,000 was imposed under offences by Juveniles for allowing a minor to drive the vehicle, rest Rs 18000 fine was penalised for not wearing helmet, lack of PUC certificate and other documents.

Another report has come to the fore from Sambalpur where a Police Constable Dilip Nag has been placed under suspension for driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Nag, who was posted at Dhanupali police station, was caught by Traffic police near Laxmi Talkies square on Sunday, sources said.

Later in the day in Sambalpur, Odisha Transport department sent challan on a minor boy's address for violating the traffic norms. He was penalised Rs 37, 000 for underage driving, lack of Driving License, triple riding on a two-wheeler and dangerous driving.
