Konark: Kakatpur MLA and Minister for Sports and Youth Services, Tusharkanti Behera on Saturday visited Konark and inspected the land chosen by the district administration for the installation of temporary luxury tents.

With an aim to woo tourists and convert the town from a one-day destination to a place for longer stay, the Tourism department had earlier proposed to set up luxurious tent facilities for tourists visiting the Sun Temple.

As per reports, the stretch of 50 acre land near Kushabhadra river mouth and Chandrabhaga beach has been identified as the spot to set up 50 temporary luxury tents.

While Minister Behera was accompanied by Secretary of Tourism Department Vishal Dev and Puri district Collector Balwant Singh for the inspection, the local Tehsildar and other tourism officials showed them the chosen land and explained its various aspects.

Apart from the luxury tents, the government is reportedly planning to make arrangements of foods, water sports, adventure sports and cultural programmes for the visiting tourists in Konark.

After the inspection, Behera said that the project will help tourists explore the other sightseeing destinations in the area and adjoining tourism hotspots.

“As a tourist destination site, many do not prefer staying at Konark more than a day. As the festivity season is about to begin from January, we will start the project on a pilot basis and expand it as per tourists’ demand. The new plans will attract the local tourists and also boost economy of the State,” said Behera.

“We are planning to convert Konark into a two to three days destination for tourists. The Rann Utsav is organised for four months at Kutch (Gujarat) during which it turns into a mini tourist city. We are trying to organise something like that in Konark which will be a new concept for Odisha,” said the secretary of Tourism Department, Vishal Dev.
