Rourkela: Tension ran high at the Labour Tenament area under Raghunathpali police station here following the death of a two-year-old boy in a road mishap on Wednesday night. The boy who was run over by a speeding car died on way to hospital, sources said.

According to reports, the mishap took place when some children were playing near Subas slum. The speeding car hit the boy and fled the spot.

The boy, who suffered serious injuries in the accident, was immediately admitted to hospital where doctor declared him dead.

Irate over the incident, the locals staged a road blockade demanding immediate arrest of the culprit apart from grant of compensation to the victim’s family. Moreover, they have demanded restrictions on movement of speeding vehicles in the locality.

The agitating locals, however, withdrew the stir after intervention of police who have assured them action in this regard. Further investigation by police is on.

Earlier in the day, a woman and her minor son were killed while her husband sustained critical injuries after they were hit by an unknown vehicle near Khantapada police station in Balasore district on Thursday.

The mishap occurred this morning when the trio was reportedly on their way to Bhadrak from Seragada on a scooter. The woman and her son died on the spot following the accident.

The husband of the woman was shifted to a hospital with grievous wounds. The driver of the unknown vehicle which hit the trio escaped from the spot with the vehicle.

In a related incident, two persons died after their bike hit a roadside tree near Buchakatei chhak under Riamal police limits in Deogarh district today.

The police have recovered the bodies of the deceased. Their identity is yet to be ascertained.
