Bhubaneswar: The world-famous Sun Temple and the tourist town of Konark in Puri district will be completely solarised to develop it into a Surya Nagri meaning 'solar city'.

The Centre has launched a scheme for the complete solarisation of Sun Temple and Konark town and earmarked Rs 25 crore to implement the project.

Informing about the ambitious project, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and New and Renewable Energy, RK Singh said, “We have taken up the complete solarisation of the Konark Sun Temple and Konark town of Odisha in pursuance of the Prime Minister Modi's vision to develop it as ‘Surya Nagri’ to convey the message of synergy between the ancient Sun Temple and the Solar Energy.”

The scheme envisages setting up of 10 MW grid-connected solar projects and various off-grid applications such as solar trees, drinking water kiosks, and power plants with battery storage, he tweeted.

The Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) will implement the project with 100% Central Financial Assistance of Rs 25 crores from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. The Scheme will meet all the energy requirements of Konark town with solar energy.

Union Minister Pratap Sarangi welcomed the move and said that with the implementation of the scheme the residents of Konark town and tourists visiting the world-famous monument will not face any energy-related problem.
