Berhampur: The family members of a youth staged dharna in front of Sorada Police Station on Friday night over his death due to alleged torture in lockup in Ganjam district.
The youth identified as Anil Muni, son of Lokanath Muni of Kainthapalli Sahi under Sorada Police limits was reportedly arrested three days back in connection with the kidnapping case of a girl.
When police did not get enough evidence against him, Anil was released yesterday evening. However, he died immediately after reaching his home.
Sources said, Anil had eloped with a girl. After a complaint at the Sorada Police Station by the family members of the girl, he was detained by the cops three days back while the girl was handed over to her family.
Yesterday, when the girl in her statement told that she had willingly left her house as she was in love with Anil, the latter was immediately handed over to his family members.
Holding the cops responsible for Anil’s death, locals and his family members staged dharna outside the police station by placing his body on the road.
“He was tortured and beaten in the police custody for last three days. When he came home, we saw bruises on his entire body and applied medicine. However, he succumbed to his injuries,” alleged a family member of Anil.
Following the intervention of the Sorada Police Station Inspector-In-Charge, the agitators withdraw their dharna and Anil’s body was sent to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for post-mortem.
The autopsy report will ascertain the exact cause of the death of Anil. However, Sorada Police Station IIC is yet to comment in connection with the incident. Further investigation is underway.
