Bolangir: In yet another incident of social stigma associated with Covid infection, the dead body of a man was carried on a scooty by his family members at Salandi under Belapada block of Bolangir district on Thursday.

The man identified as Uddhav Behera had tested positive for coronavirus infection some seven days ago and was under home quarantine. Behera’s wife was also tested positive for the infection and she is under home isolation now.

However, Behera’s health condition deteriorated on Thursday morning and he succumbed to the deadly virus the same day. After his death, villagers refused to help in the cremation and lend shoulder to the deceased out of fear of infection.

With no other alternative, Behera’s two sons and nephew decided to perform his last rites all by themselves. They wore PPE kits and tied Behera’s dead body inside a plastic bag before carrying him to the village crematorium in a scooty.

The body of a Covid positive patient was also carried on a bullock cart and cremated after remaining unattended for around nine hours at Tileibani Suguda village in Deogarh district yesterday.

Bolangir district on Friday reported 459 new Covid-19 cases. This took the infection tally to 13,091 in the district which included 2,461 active cases, 49 deaths and 10,581 recoveries.
