Keonjhar: A sniffer dog helped police trace a thief within hours after being pressed into action to solve a burglary case at Telkoi village under Telkoi police station in Keonjhar district.

The burglary reportedly took place last Sunday in the house of one Panchanan Samantaray near Telkoi Upper Primary School when all family members were out for some celebration.

According to sources, the next morning when the family returned home, they found the door broken while all the jewellery, gold ornaments, mobile phone, a trolley bag and other valuable items were missing from the house. Panchanan lodged a complaint at the local police station.

During preliminary investigation and searches conducted in the periphery of his house, police found the trolley bag lying in a field behind Panchanan's house. However, the trolley was empty. Moments later, police stumbled upon a slipper near the bag which served as a major clue to trace the thief.

Taking up further investigation in a scientific manner, a special team was immediately called to the spot, and a sniffer dog was also pressed into service.

The sniffer dog immediately got to work and led the police and scientific team to the house of one Dharmendra Pallai of nearby Bhuyan street. Following a search in the house, police recovered the stolen mobile phone and some ornaments though all the items could not be traced.

Dharmendra was subsequently arrested and forwarded to court.
