Sambalpur: Acting upon the public demand to allow movement of people during Independence Day & Nuakhai festival, the district administration has deferred the scheduled weekend shutdown in the Western Odisha district of Sambalpur.

As per a letter issued by the Collector and District Magistrate, the weekend shutdown order has been partially modified by replacing shutdowns on 15th, 22nd and 23rd August with 16th and 17th August respectively.

“Weekend shutdown on 15th, 22nd and 23rd August 2020 is hereby cancelled and there will be shutdown on 16th and 17th August,” the letter read.

Earlier demands were raised to either defer or pre-pone the shutdown on dates coinciding with Independence Day on 15th August and Nuakhai on 23rd August.

Earlier on Tuesday, Lok Sabha member from Bargarh constituency, Suresh Pujari had urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to relax COVID-19 weekend shutdown restrictions in western Odisha to facilitate the observance of Nuakhai festival.
