Shocking! Eyes ‘gouged out again at Angul Hospital’, two in three days

Angul: The issue of safety and security at Angul District Headquarters hospital has come under scanner as once again the eyes of a dead person were allegedly gouged out at the morgue of the hospital Monday night. Shockingly, this is the second such incident reported at Angul hospital in a span of four days.

Last evening, the deceased reportedly met with an accident after his vehicle collided head-on with a pick up van. Though he was rushed to hospital, doctors here declared him brought dead. His body was kept at the morgue of the hospital and while being taken for autopsy today, his relatives found that his right eye has been removed.

Palpable tension prevailed in the area as the family members along with locals staged a dharna outside the CDMO office demanding immediate action against the culprit.

Angul Sub-Collector Basudev Satapathy who has been directed by the Collector to probe the incident, said, “I saw the dead body. One of his eyes has been damaged. This is second such incident in the hospital. Right now I have no clue, so I will have a discussion with the CDMO and ADMO on this.”

Though police have initiated an investigation, ASP informed that they are awaiting post mortem reports to ascertain the reason behind the case.

“A probe is currently underway, but it is difficult to come to any conclusion without medical reports. We are waiting for the post mortem reports. Only then we can ascertain the actual reason behind the incident. Such a thing inside the morgue is disturbing,” said Jadunath Hansda, Additional SP, Angul.

On July 18, eyes of a 4-year-old dead girl were gouged out at the morgue of Angul hospital. Reportedly, the minor girl was admitted to the hospital in serious condition and had succumbed later, following which her body was kept in the morgue. Next morning, when the body was being taken for autopsy, father of the girl found that her eyes were removed and there were bruise marks on her nose. Banarpal Police have launched an investigation into the case based on the complaint by the family members.

Asked about what steps the administration has taken so far in connection with the minor girl case, the Sub-Collector said, “Police inquiry is on. The administration will take stringent action whosoever is found responsible.”
