Berhampur: In a shocking incident, a cow was seriously injured after it accidentally chewed on a crude bomb ostensibly taking it for some fruit at Kendupat village under Khalikote block in Ganjam district on Tuesday.

It is suspected that some people had planted the explosives to kill or deter wild boars and other animals from entering their farmlands.

As per reports, the cow is believed to have mistakenly consumed the bomb which exploded in her mouth.

The explosive device has caused substantial damage to the animal’s mouth, reports stated.
The cow is now being treated at a local hospital while a police complaint has been lodged in connection with the incident.

The incident comes in the backdrop of the massive nation-wide outrage that was witnessed last year after a pregnant elephant died in Kerala after it ate a fruit filled with firecrackers.

It is pertinent to mention here that people as well as poachers adopted different methods either to trap or kill wild animals in different parts of the State. Apart from using snares and electric shock traps, people also use explosives laced with fruits and meat to kill or main wild animals including wild boars and monkeys which stray into their fields.

Such practice, especially by farmers, have now emerged a major concern as the unsuspecting animals become easy prey to such cruelties.
