Bhubaneswar: In a bid to tackle pollution of rivers and other water bodies across the State, six septage treatment plants (STPs) were inaugurated at Bhubaneswar, Puri, Berhampur, Dhenkanal, Sambalpur and Rourkela today.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik dedicated the STPs to the people of these six cities through video conferencing during a two-day national workshop on 'Faecal Sludge & Septage Management' in Bhubaneswar today.

"This has been an important conference as far as hygiene, cleanliness and healthy drinking water is concerned in the urban areas. Odisha is doing very well in this regard," said the CM after inaugurating the septage plants.

The plant will treat the faecal sludge collected from different pit latrines, septic tanks and other onsite sanitation systems so that water segregated from it can be used in water treatment plants and the sludge can be recycled and reused, reports said.

The government has also planned to construct more such plants in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Balasore, Bhadrak, Baripada, Angul and Dhenkanal in a phased manner.
