Cuttack: President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday appointed senior lawyer Savitri Ratho as a judge of the Orissa High Court.

“In exercise of power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Miss Savitri Ratho to be a judge of the Orissa High Court with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office,” read a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

At present, there are 15 judges in the Orissa High Court with Justice Mohammad Rafiq as its Chief Justice. Earlier in January, the Supreme Court Collegium had approved the proposal for the elevation of Ratho as the judge of Orissa High Court.

Ratho, who is currently posted as the Additional Government Advocate of the State government, will be the third woman judge of the Orissa HC after Amiya Kumari Padhi and Sanju Panda.

She is the daughter of former Director General of Police (DGP) Prafulla Rath.
