Paradip: The students of Sri Maa Government High School in Paradip today staged a dharna and locked up the main gate of the school over various demands.

Alleging that they have been facing several problems in the school for the past one month, the students stated that despite repeated complaints, the school headmaster has not paid any heed to their complaints.

The students have also demanded the transfer of headmaster, formation of a new school management committee, transfer of drunk teachers and appointment of adequate number of teachers, informed sources.

"Only one class is being held in the entire day. There is acute shortage of teachers in our school. Teachers are coming to class in an inebriated condition. We submitted a written application to our headmaster but he tore it without listening to us," alleged a student, Ananya Sahu.

"The demands of the students are factual. They are fighting for their future. I have urged the school authorities and district administration to resolve the issues of the students soon," said a villager Shiba Prasad Samantray.

Responding to the allegations, Anjali Swain, a teacher, said "The students have cited a number of issues, but whether their allegations are true or not, can only be ascertained after a teacher-student meeting."

However, no comments from school headmaster or members of school management committee could be obtained.

In another such instance in Kalahandi district, the students of Kasturba Gandhi Residential School along with their parents staged a road blockade on NH-26 today alleging irregularities in the mid-day meal. Road communication between Jeypore and Bhawanipatna was severely disrupted due to the blockade.

The protestors alleged that despite repeated complaints with the higher ups regarding the irregularities in mid-day meal, nothing concrete has been done so far.

However, the protest was withdrawn after officials of district administrations reached the spot and held discussions with the locals. The officials have assured to take necessary steps to address the issue at the earliest, informed sources.
