Bhubaneswar: He had only a few seconds to take a call - either allow VVIP convoy to pass or stop it to make room for the passage of an ambulance. But traffic constable Jagannath Jayasingh stood firm and decided to stop Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik’s carcade to let an ambulance pass at a busy junction in Bhubaneswar.

The traffic constable is now earning praises for his decision of stopping the CM’s convoy at the traffic junction yesterday and allowing a clear passage for the ambulance. According to Jayasingh, the Chief Minister’s carcade was coming from AG square side when he got a message that an ambulance was on its way from Sishu Bhawan Chhak side at around 7:45 pm yesterday.

“Without thinking much I decided to clear the traffic and make room for the ambulance by stopping the CM’s convoy at Hospital Chhak. Only after clearing the emergency vehicle I allowed traffic from the other side,” said Jayasingh stating further that he took this decision as saving somebody’s life in the emergency vehicle was more important.

“My priority was allowing the emergency vehicle and without thinking much, I sought permission from senior officials to stop the CM’s carcade,” the traffic constable said.

The traffic constable’s move is certainly commendable at a time when already there is a lot of hue and cry over ambulances getting stuck in traffic during peak hours in the smart city.

“There have been a lot of instances where ambulances are getting stuck as they are not getting free passage. But the decision of the constable is praiseworthy as he stopped CM’s carcade,” said Kedar Pradhan, a local resident.

Senior officials of Commissionerate Police too have appreciated the constable for letting the ambulance pass.
