Bhubaneswar: Army aspirants from Odisha and other states who landed in Bhubaneswar to appear for a recruitment examination spent the night on footpath under the open sky due to unavailability of any accommodation facilities.
According to sources, hundreds of candidates assembled near 120 Battalion located along Jaydev Vihar-Governor House Road last evening to appear in the exam today. Since the exams were scheduled early in the morning, the candidates slept on the footpath closeby.

“Since no accommodation or toilet facilities were available, we spent the night in the open. We are concerned that the lack of amenities might have impact on the examination of the aspirants,” rued a candidate.
Soon after the matter came to light, Twin City Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi tweeted, “120 Bn should have done something or taken our help. Finding accommodation for so many people at this late hour will be an issue."
“We could accommodate about 500 candidates in the stadium last night. Candidates are from different states. I will discuss with the concerned authorities and we will extend assistance, if they require," he stated.
Later today, the Commissioner has stated through another tweet, "We have discussed with the Army authorities & have provided them an open ground to set up tents for temporary shelter. We are happy to assist them in any other way, but we can’t interfere in their processes... Police vehicles provided to send candidates to designated shelters so that no one sleeps on the street. On our request, charitable groups will provide cooked food from tomorrow."
Moreover, five social activists sought NHRC intervention the matter and urged the commission to direct concerned authorities of 120 Battalion, Chief Secretary of Odisha to make temporary shelter & sanitation arrangements for the aspirants.
