Bhubaneswar: A day after four contractual employees died in a major gas leak mishap at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) on Thursday ordered a high-level probe into the incident.
The state-owned steel major in a statement said, “A high level committee has been formed to inquire into the cause of incident and all emergency protocols have been immediately activated in the plant.”
Terming the death of four employees as ‘unfortunate’, SAIL in the statement said that the contractual workers were engaged at the plant’s Coal Chemicals Department (CDD). They succumbed to a suspected gas leakage incident.

As per the statement, the workers felt unwell at around 9 am on Wednesday and were immediately rushed to the ICU of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) at Rourkela for treatment.
Earlier, RSP Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dipak Chattaraj suspended Safety Department assistant engineer Smruti RanjanSahoo in connection with the gas leak mishap that claimed four lives.
On Wednesday, two Deputy General Managers (DGMs) of the RSP- N Das, the DGM of Coal Chemical Department and G Barik, the DGM of Energy Management Department were suspended for the accident.
