Bolangir: A youth from Bolangir district was left baffled after he was slapped with a penalty of Rs 7,000 by Jagatsinghpur RTO for alleged traffic rule violation.

The challan copy issued by the RTO mentioned that Abhishek Pasayat of Club Pada under Town police limits in the district was penalised Rs 5,000 for driving vehicle without a valid licence (DL) and Rs 2,000 for over speeding.

However, the vehicle owner expressed shock over the penalty claiming that he never visited Jagatsinghpur. He said his SUV bearing the registration number OD03G3999 was parked at LNS club on the day of issue of the challan.

After receiving the challan, Abhishek complained to Jagatsinghpur RTO to inquire who was using the same registration number.

A CCTV footage available with the Traffic department showed a Scorpio with the exact registration number OD03G3999 as that of Abhishek's car.

“The vehicle was in front of my house, but Jagatsinghpur RTO issued the challan and asked me to pay Rs 7,000 fine for traffic rule violation. I was also asked to submit documents at RTO office. Today I visited the RTO office in this regard,” said Abhishek.

Watchman at the LNS Club, Bolangir, Sudarsan Patel also confirmed that there was no movement of the vehicle on that day. “I look after the vehicles at the club and the Scorpio in question had not gone anywhere on that day. Someone might be using a duplicate registration number of the vehicle.”

When contacted, Jagatsighpur RTO Pratap Kishore Panda said, “Someone might have used the same number in his/her vehicle or using a fake number. We are inquiring into the matter. The enforcement squad has been asked to seize the vehicle if they come across it anywhere. We will cancel the challan issued against the actual vehicle owner.”
