Bhubaneswar: Odisha government on Tuesday urged Union Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to direct Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) authorities to initiate steps for the upgradation of  Ispat General Hospital (IGH) into a medical college, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.

In a letter to the Union Minister, Odisha Steel Minister Prafulla Mallick stated that the IGH has only been upgraded to a super specialty hospital with 200 beds.

"Even as six years have elapsed since the announcement, the IGH could not be converted into a medical college. We all are disappointed with the RSP authorities who failed to take up PM Narendra Modi's promise," Mallick stated in his letter.

The State Minister recalled that the Prime Minister, during his visit to the Steel City, had announced to upgrade the IGH into a medical college and super specialty hospital. The RSP had been entrusted with the responsibility of making the hospital a medical college.

In 2015, former Union Steel Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had also assured the local MP to work as early as possible for the medical college, Mallick stated.
