Jeypore: Two cheques amounting to Rs 6 lakh handed over to the family of a victim in Bariput stone quarry tragedy as compensation have been allegedly bounced due to lack of sufficient funds in the payers account.

Family members of Ghanashyam Guru of Deogarh, who was killed in the landslide at a stone quarry in Bariput, claimed that two cheques given by the Red Cross Fund have bounced.

Father of Ghanashyam, Durjyadhan Guru stated "The Koraput Collector had given two cheques worth Rs 5 lakh and Rs 1 lakh which were denied by the Utkal Grameen Bank, Deogarh branch citing insufficient funds in the account."

However, authorities of the District Red Cross unit were unavailable for comments.

Last month, two labourers, Ghanshyam Guru of Deogarh district and Sanjay Das of Athagarh were killed following a landslide at a stone quarry at Bariput hills in Koraput district.

Bodies of the two labourers were rescued after a massive rescue operation carried out by the NDRAF, ODRAF and fire personnel team.
