Bhubaneswar: A 10-year-old Royal Bengal tiger under treatment at the Nandankanan zoo hospital for the past six months breathed its last today.

The male tiger named ‘Manish’ was normal colored and was being treated under the direct supervision of experts from Veterinary College, OUAT, informed zoo authorities.

“The tiger died during blood transfusion. It was suffering from Blood Protozoan disease caused by a lethal virus Cytauxzoon felis. The disease has no proven treatment. Despite all attempts, we failed to save the big cat,” informed a senior zoo official.

With Manish’s death, the zoo famous for its tiger population and captive breeding of the big cat is now left with 11 male and 13 female tigers.

Earlier on August 29, the zoological park had lost an 8-year old male African lion. The lion brought from Tel Aviv, Israel in 2015, was found dead in safari of the zoo.

As per reports, the animal had been keeping unwell and was under treatment. Post mortem reports attributed the death to hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.

Following the deaths, the zoo authorities have strengthened regular disinfection in and around enclosures and intensified observation of the beasts.
