Sambalpur: Sightseeing at the famous Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur has now become even more delightful thanks to the much-awaited ropeway service which was thrown open for public on Thursday.

After years of delay since the commencement of the project in April, 2016, the ropeway service was finally rolled out by the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation with the launch of a 400-metre cableway facility for providing rich experience to tourists.

People visiting the place can enjoy the new facility between 9 AM and 5 PM every day except on Mondays. The ropeway connects Jawahar Udyan with Gandhi Minar near the dam project and it takes around 10 minutes for tourists to travel in the naval lifting device from one side to the other. Charges of Rs 50 per head are applicable to avail the facility.

“As of now there are eight trolleys and each vehicle has a carrying capacity of four persons. We have taken adequate measures including arrangement of power generator for the safety of the tourists,” said Pradeep Saha, a management official in charge of the ropeway service.

Tourists visiting the Hirakud dam project, meanwhile, have expressed happiness for getting a chance to simultaneously enjoy watching the natural beauty of the dam and the forest near it.

“I am very happy to be here as I got the chance to enjoy the beauty of the area and it was even more breathtaking to see it from the top on the ropeway," said a tourist.

Authorities are hopeful that the new facility will help in boosting tourism at the destination.
