Jagatsinghpur: Irate locals from 29 panchayats under Kujang block in Paradip staged a road blockade today at Bhuta Mundai chhak demanding discharge of excess water from Haladipani creek.

According to sources, the district administration is yet to take any steps for the construction of proposed siphon spillway(a short discharge pipe) and sluice gate to discharge excess rainwater from Haladipani creek.

Following the protest vehicular traffic was severely disrupted on Paradip-Cuttack and Paradip-Chandikhole route, added sources.

The excess rainwater from these panchayats used to flow into Mahanadi river through Haladipani creek but now it has been completely chocked following which water gets accumulated in the villages under the panchayats, sources said.

The residents of the affected panchayats have been demanding a siphon spillway at Chakradharpur and a culvert at Lokanathpada to discharge rainwater directly to Mahanadi river. They have also demanded construction of a sluice gate on Mahanadi river to control flood water, informed sources.

Earlier on September 2018, the locals had blocked Cuttack-Paradip State Highway at Chakradharpur demanding the same.
