Residents Suffer As Rain Triggers Waterlogging In Berhampur

Bhubaneswar: A sudden spell of rain in the wee hours of today left many low lying areas of the silk city waterlogged exposing the lack of preparedness of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC).

Torrential rain from 4 AM to 6 AM in the morning threw life out of gear in the city with rainwater gushing into houses in many areas including Gajapatinagar, lane no- 9 and 10 of Gandhinagar, Tulasinagar, Brajanagar, Subuddhipeta Sahi and Laxminrushinha Sahi.

Water was flowing above the main road near De Paul School in Berhampur bringing communication to a standstill, informed sources.

BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore rushed to review the flash flood situation in the town.

“The sudden rain triggered waterlogging in the area. In order to tackle the waterlogging here, we have to make arrangements for diversion of water near the main corporation road. We have already discussed the matter in a meeting and temporary arrangements will be done for the water diversion. Unless permanent arrangements are done, the issues will persist,” said Rathore speaking OTV while reviewing the situation at Tulasinagar.

A resident of Tulasinagar said, “As soon as the rain started, water entered our houses. Earlier, only the roads used to get waterlogged but since the last two years, drain water is gushing into our houses too. Despite written complaints to the civic authorities, no steps have been taken in this regards yet.”

“The nearby drain is getting choked which is leading to waterlogging in the area. I shifted to the locality two years back and every time there is rain, the region gets waterlogged,” said another resident of Tulasinagar.
