Bhubaneswar: Legendry Jatra actor Mahendra Das aka Viku Seth, who passed away at an early age of 55, will always be remembered for his memorable dialogues and performance in the play 'Saguna Basichi Dena Melai' and many others.

He was an acclaimed jatra artist. People loved his character in 'Saguna Basichi Dena Melai' so much that eventually he got the moniker of Viku Seth and became a household name in the state.

The eminent artist passed away after suffering a heart attack today at his Choudwar residence in Cuttack. He was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital from Choudwar to Cuttack after complaining acute chest pain but died on the way.

Some of his popular dialogues in the play 'Saguna Basichi Dena Melai' was- ‘Na Taa Tahele Mina’, ‘Bhe’, ‘Bhala Nachila’, 'Bhala Ku Bhala Kahiba Kana Kharap’.

After a long stint in Janata Gananatya, he switched over allegiance to Kalinga Gananatya, Parbati Gananatya and later, Dhauli Gananatya. He also acted in couple of Odia films, but he could never emulate his huge success he had achieved on stage in Jollywood.

Jatra artists and lovers across the state payed tribute to Mahendra following his untimely demise. “It is a great loss to the state jatra fraternity. He was immensely popular for his negative roles and dialogue delivery. The legendary actor was also very cordial with his co-artists. Jatra lovers will always miss him,” said the late Mahendra Das’ close friend and co-artist, Loknath Lenka.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP national vice-president Baijayant Jay Panda and several others have offered their condolences on the passing away of the great stage artist.
