A new coating of the runway to smoothen its surface will be undertaken from the first week of February 2020. It will to take around eight to 10 months for completion of the process.

In the first phase, the re-carpeting work will be carried out during night and flight operation will remain partially suspended from 12 am to 6 am. In the second phase, the work will be carried out during day time and flight operations will be controlled during 10 am and 6 pm.

The flight timings will be rescheduled after holding discussion with various carriers and other stakeholders, the airport director said.

Notably, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had earlier postponed the commencement of re-carpeting of the runway which is essential for the safety of flight operations every 10 year. The last re-carpeting work was carried out at Bhubaneswar airport in 2007.
