Jajpur: A special team of Jajpur Police on Tuesday recreated the crime scene to ascertain how the body of Jharaphula Nayak, student of Rama Devi (RD) Women’s University in Bhubaneswar, was dumped on the roadside near Mulapala in Jajpur district after she died last week.

After Jajpur District & Sessions Court granted permission, Kuakhia Police today took accused Rakesh Swain, the alleged boyfriend of Jharaphula, on a three-day remand for further questioning. Following his interrogation at Kuakhia police station by Jajpur SDPO and IIC) of the Kuakhia PS, the investigating team took Rakesh and carried out a detailed inspection of the site, from where her body was recovered. The accused is also being interrogated on why he and his friend Sekharjyoti decided to carry the body of Jharaphula from Bhubaneswar to Jajpur to dump it there.

After this, Police is likely to take Rakesh to Bhubaneswar for a crime scene recreation, sources said. An investigation is currently underway on the basis of two CCTV footages recovered - one from where her body was traced and the other from near the guest house in Bhubaneswar's Khandagiri area where Jharaphula and Rakesh had stayed on January 26.

Jharaphula's father Ramakant Nayak has urged police for a thorough investigation and stringent action against those found involved. "He (Rakesh) killed my daughter. I will not get back her but the accused should be punished. If action is not taken, women cannot feel safe in the State. Anyone can kill anyone as and when they want."

Jajpur SDPO Chinmay Nayak said, "Investigation is in progress. We can reveal further details only after the probe is over." Sources said police have sent her samples to the laboratory for viscera report.

This morning, Jharkhand CM's sister and JMM Pradesh Mahila Morcha president Anjani Soren met the family members of Jharaphula and assured them that she will fight for justice. Accusing the ruling-BJD government of neglecting the tribals in the State, Soren has demanded proper investigation and justice for the deceased girl's family.

"Odisha has been continuously witnessing atrocities against women and girls. The government boasts of 'Maa Ku Samman', is this how they are giving 'Maa Ku Samman'? How will women feel secure to step out of their house if they are not safe?" she questioned targeting the government.

A former legislator of JMM has sought a high-level probe into the mysterious death case and also a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for kin of deceased Jharaphula.

While police have expedited the investigation, they are now awaiting the viscera reports of Jharaphula which will probably give them vital evidence in the case and the exact reason behind her death.

The deceased girl Jharaphula, from the Marundeipasi village under Jashipur police limits in Mayurbhanj district, had come to Bhubaneswar on January 24 to attend a birthday party next day. Reportedly after she developed a stomach ache, she informed her family and decided to stay back in Bhubaneswar.
