Jajpur/Bhubaneswar: Odisha State Commission for Women's Chairperson Minati Behera on Friday visited Jajpur district to inquire into the death of Jharaphula Nayak- a student of Ramadevi University.

Behera visited the spot where the body of the deceased was dumped at Kuakhia area of the district on January 27. Condemning the incident, she said, "It is an unfortunate and shameful act and the culprits behind it will be given stringent punishment."

As per reports, Behera will meet the deceased girl's family members. Besides, she will discuss about the case with district SP and Collector at the Camp Court to be held at Collector's office today.

"Police are carrying out the investigation very promptly and the district administration is also actively doing the needful. The culprits will be punished soon," she added.

On the other hand, the boyfriend of the deceased and one of the accused, Rakesh Swain surrendered at Airfield Police Station in Bhubaneswar on Thursday night. He was subsequently arrested. However, Rakesh was handed over to Jajpur police as the body was found dumped in Kuakhia area of the district.

Jajpur police will interrogate Rakesh to find out the motive behind the act and how did he carry out it.

It is pertinent to mention that the body of 21-year-old Jharaphula was found dumped beside a road near Mulapala square in Kuakhia on Wednesday.

Jharaphula, who hailed from Marundeipasi village under Jashipur police limits in Mayurbhanj district had gone to Bhubaneswar on January 24 and attended classes the next day. On January 27, her body was found dumped on the roadside. Police had recovered her body and launched an investigation.

During the probe, police got vital clues after examining the CCTV footage that captured the scene of two youths carrying the body in a scooter. The investigating team also examined the Call Details Record (CDR) of the deceased.

Basing on the allegations of the father of the deceased that her daughter was murdered and he suspected involvement of a youth named Rakesh Swain who was in a relationship with her daughter, the investigating team had further strengthened the probe.
