Cuttack: Tension prevailed at Ravenshaw University on Friday after hundreds of students staged demonstration before the vice-chancellor’s office demanding reduction of self-financing course fees in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to sources, the students launched the protest carrying placards with different slogans to justify their demands. They also submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor in this regard.

“The livelihoods of our parents are at stake due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. Most of them have lost their regular jobs. It has now become impossible for most of the students to afford the exorbitant self-financing course fees,” said a protesting student Mukesh Lenka.

“The university should consider the situation and reduce the fee structure of self-financing courses up to 30-40%. We have requested the registrar of the university several times in this regard but in vain. If the university doesn’t take any immediate decision, we will intensify our strike further,” he said.

However, a senior official of the university stated that it’s not possible to reduce the fees of self- financing courses.

“If the students want, they could pay their total amount of fees in instalments. This much we could do,” said the official.
