Bhubaneswar: Odisha has witnessed a spurt in the incidents of rape in the past couple of years. As per the draft report of the office of the Accountant General (General and Social Sector), rape cases have increased continuously over the years and it rose 17% in 2018 as compared to 2016.

While 2,144 rape cases were registered in 2016 and 2,221 in 2017, the number rose to 2,502 in 2018.

The report also highlighted that Odisha received Rs 135.32 crore during 2016-19 for police modernisation while the State spent Rs 80 crore. Though funds have been sanctioned, there has been no substantial improvement in the law and order situation, the report said.
