Malkangiri: The Saveri River in Malkangiri district is in spate despite lack of rainfall in the past two days in the district. As per reports, the river continues to swell due to inflow of water from Godavari River following incessant rain in Andhra Pradesh.

As floodwater is flowing five-feet over a bridge on Saveri River near Sukma, the communication between Malkangiri and Chhattisgarh has been completely cut off.

Similarly, several villages have been submerged due to the rise in the water level of Saveri and Sileru rivers confluence in Motu block. Many villagers in Khairaput region are also cut off from rest of the world as several culverts and low-lying bridges in the region have been swept away.

Though people have not been relocated, district administration is providing free food and relied materials to the affected people. The repair work of several roads and culverts, which were washed away following the heavy rain, is being carried out on a war footing.
