Bhubaneswar: Destiny's cruel hand seems to have cast a giant shadow over the family of Constable Manoj Kumar Behera who lost his life in the Pulwama terror attack last year. Even as 12 months have elapsed since the Odia jawan achieved martyrdom, his parents are struggling to eke out a living. Reason, Manoj's wife Elilata has been accused of siphoning off all the financial aid that the family had received from the government.

Martyr Manoj's parents, who hail from Ratanpur village under Niali area of the Cuttack district, are now leading a miserable life as their daughter-in-law has allegedly moved away after receiving all the financial assistance.

"He (Manoj) was my only son and the sole bread winner of our family. After his death, our daughter-in-law Elilata Behera was our only hope. However, she took away all the financial assistance and left our house. We are now facing a lot of hardship. We have no source of income left," said Jitendra Behera, father of Pulwama attack martyr Manoj.

Elilata, who is currently staying in a government quarters in CRPF camp, Bhubaneswar has however refuted the allegations. She counter-alleged saying her in-laws used to torture her after her husband's death.

“They (in-laws) started torturing me mentally after the death of my husband. They asked me to sign cheques and withdrew money from the bank. When they again pressurised me to sign the cheque, I refused. Fed up with repeated torture, I left the house to ensure a better future for my daughter,” said Elilata.
