Bhubaneswar: Despite Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s announcement in the year 2016 to roll out Commissionerate system of police in three important cities-Sambalpur, Berhampur and Rourkela, the proposal is yet to see the light of the day.

As per reports, the central government had approved relevant posts to under the system for the mentioned cities a year back.

According to the notification issued by the General Administration and Public Grievance department, posts of Police Commissioner for Sambalpur, Deputy Commissioner for Rourkela and Berhampur have also been made. The information regarding the same has been intimated by State Headquarters of Odisha Police to all the police heads.

It may be noted that amidst the rising cases of crime in the cities, the demand for setting up Commissionerate system has also monumentally increased.

“Considering the rising crime rates, it is high time Commissionerate police system is introduced in other cities as well,” said Sudhansu Panda, a resident of Berhampur.

Newton Ray, a resident of Sambalpur said, “There has been a significant rise in number of criminal cases so Commissionerate of police is need of the hour in the western Odisha city."

Speaking about the proposed system, former Police DG Bipin Bihari Mishra, said “The posts have been approved by the Indian government so there shouldn’t be any problem to start Commissionerate system in the three cities.”

"Besides, the Revenue Department will issue notification on the areas to be included in the Commissionerate system," he added.
