Berhampur: Hundreds of commuters were left in lurch as private buses plying from Berhampur to Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Chatrapur and other parts of Odisha remained off roads following an indefinite strike called by the Ganjam District Private Bus Operators’ Association over suspension of private bus services from the city new bus stand due to repair and renovation works.

While the Berhampur Development Authority (BDA) had served a notice asking the bus owners to launch services from Modern Bus Terminal in Haldiapadar till completion of the work, the decision to go on strike was taken after a meeting with administration in this regard failed to reach any consensus.

“The administration is working on expansion plans and because there are numerous traffic problems, it is getting difficult to accommodate so many buses in different routes of the city. To ease the traffic, gradually we have to shift this to new Haldiapadar terminal. What we have decided is in next two months, all the buses will be diverted through Haldiapadar,” said Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange.

On the other hand, Ganjam district bus owners' association secretary, Santosh Pati said, “We held a meeting with all bus owners to know their views and each one of them said this is not possible. Bus owners have decided to stop services from Berhampur till the terminal gets operational again.”
