Prisoner dies after attack by inmate in Phulbani jail

Phulbani: An under-trial prisoner died after being attacked by his fellow inmate at Phulbani jail here on Sunday morning. The prisoner has been identified as Laxman Nayak of Tummudibandh area.

According to sources, one Kanhu Charan Pradhan who is serving a life term at the jail allegedly hit Laxman with a stone on his head.

Critically injured, Laxman was immediately rushed to Phulbani hospital and later shifted to Berhmapur MKCG Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

"Pradhan was a psychiatric patient and was often being treated at Berhmapur MKCG hospital. Even as his mental condition was stable recently, he suddenly went frenzied and attacked Laxman with a stone today morning while roaming in the jail yard," In-charge Superintendent of Phulbani jail Gariba Sahu said.

"Laxman’s body will be handed over to his family members after completion of post-mortem and other legal proceedings. A FIR has been lodged against the accused," added Sahu.
