Nabarangpur: Nabarangpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivekanand Sharma seems to have once again landed in trouble after Congress leader and former MP Pradip Majhi accused the official of thrashing and harassing a youth of the district and demanded his suspension in connection with the matter.
Majhi also demanded action against Nabarangpur Inspector-in-Charge (IIC), who is also allegedly involved in the incident. The leader further threatened to observe bandh in the district on December 4, if no steps are taken in this regard.
The incident occurred when the youth Shravan Kumar, a dalit and Christian by religion had gone to Sharma’s house to install TATA Sky connection, alleged Majhi at a presser on Sunday.
“The youth had gone to install TATA Sky connection at the Nabarangpur SP’s house. But as he did not pay respect by folding hands to the officer, he thrashed him mercilessly and handed over to the IIC. Later the IIC kidnapped and took him to different places of the district in the name of police custody since the past three days. The youth is also being threatened by the IIC,” Majhi alleged adding that the SP had done the same thing with five other youths earlier.
Responding to Majhi’s allegation, Sharma refuted the charges levelled against him. “The allegations are baseless. The leader has been pressurising us to release a youth who is an accused in a kidnapping case. When I refused to do so, he came up with the false charges” said the SP.

Earlier in August, two subordinate staff working as orderlies at the SP’s residence had alleged that they were subjected to torture by the officer several times.
