Malkangiri: Hit by acute poverty, a tribal woman allegedly abandoned her newborn child after delivery at Balimela hospital in the district.

According to sources, the woman, a native of Chitapari- III village under Korkukonda block of the district was admitted to Balimela hospital on September 13 after she complained of labour pain. She delivered a baby at the hospital but surprisingly did not accept the newborn.

Asked about the reason behind her decision, the woman said that since she had lost her husband, she would be unable to take care of the baby and sustain her family with two more children a boy (8) and a girl (5) year old.

“She was not willing to keep the baby and I used to advise her to not abort or kill the child. On September 13, she complained of labour pain but when no one turned to take her to hospital, I myself took her to Balimela Hospital where she delivered the baby,” informed the ASHA worker.

"But as she refused to take the baby I informed the matter to Childline officials and the authorities of Balimela Hospital," she added.

The officials of Childline and Child Welfare Committee (CWC) shifted the baby to sick new-natal care unit (SNCU) of Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

“After the treatment is over, the child will be transferred to Specialised Adoption Agency where the baby will be linked to adoption process. When we get any prospective adoptive parents, the child will be handed over to them," said Malkangiri DCPO Narayan Das.
