Malkangiri: Reeling under acute financial hardship, a resident of Kartamguda village in Malkangiri was nabbed while trying to sell his 16-day-old baby girl to another person.

As per reports, one Sama Chalan of Kartamaguda tried to sell his baby girl for a certain sum of money when a team of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) officials intervened and rescued the baby. While Sama is father of six children, his wife Matung Chalan passed away on January 1 after delivering the seventh child.

"The baby has been kept at the specialised adoption agency. As this person belongs to the financially weaker section and is not in a position to take care of the child, he decided to sell his baby," said Malkangiri District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Narayan Das.

Das added that further steps will be taken according to the law.
